EPA Secondary Containment Requirements

Environmental Protection AgencyThe EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) has very strict spill containment requirements and regulations to keep facilities and their surrounding environments safe from chemical spills and other accidents. For secondary fuel containment and single drum containment, the most relevant set of rules is EPA 40 CFR 264.175, which covers the use and management of containers for hazardous materials.

Another relevant rule is the Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure (SPCC) portion of the EPA's oil spill prevention program. The SPCC helps prevent the discharge of oil into navigable water near the facility. Spill containment products, such as the single drum containment vessel listed here, are necessary to stay in compliance and avoid costly fines.

The final EPA program concerning secondary fuel containment and other hazardous materials is the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination (NPDES). This program addresses water pollution and the discharge of pollutants from facilities in the United States. Permits are issued based on the technology and water quality limitations of individual facilities or the surrounding geographic area.
